I woke up at about 5 this morning thinking about all the irons I have in the fire, some of which I get paid for and some of which I am doing because I want to. There’s an old project exploring the evolutionary relationships and biogeography of a group of Caribbean cacti, a new project getting started to look at the molecular phylogeny of a very confused and confusing other group of cacti, the peer reviewed journal I edit, the popular periodical I edit, and my actual postdoc, for which I have to get settled on all of the model inputs we are going to use for demographic and predictive modeling.

Isla Ventana in Bahía de los Ángeles, BCN, on an adventurous day 10 years ago when we took a panga ride out to Isla Angel.
There’s also two undescribed taxa in Baja that I would love to publish, but that has definitely taken a back seat, and there’s a lot of red tape involved.

Is it a cactus? a sea creature? no. It’s a rambutan.
Anyway, this isn’t a particularly interesting post, and stands more as a kind of “to do list” of my ridiculously over-committed professional life.
There’s some to do’s personally also:
Find a therapist
Make a summer travel plan
Start working out again
Add a CODA meeting to my weekly schedule
…. I think that’s all. I guess it’s no wonder I woke up at 5 with my mind filing things away frantically.
On a more recovery-related note: recently I was remembering in great detail all of the many insane choices and impulsive behaviors that constituted my life when in active addiction. I have no idea why I was recalling all of these harrowing drunk-a-log tales, but it really ramped up at a tiny meeting with two other alcoholics, where we were swapping insane stories. I think what stood out most was the nightmare of Xmas Eve 2003, about four months before I got sober, when I was staying at my girlfriend’s apartment in Santa Fe. I will probably write out detailed accounts of a lot of the many debacles that punctuated my addict/alcoholic life for years, maybe starting with that one, which involves a hit and run accident (no injuries except to me; a bruised rib), which occurred while I was driving in a blackout. But I don’t have time to get into those details today.

Here’s a cute cat pic instead.
